The most effective diagnostic test for confirming exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) in primary care settings is the non-invasive stool elastase estimation test. This test is recommended for people with suspected EPI, such as those with cystic fibrosis or symptoms of malabsorption.

If the stool elastase test result is normal but clinical suspicion remains, repeating the test is advised when symptoms or signs of malabsorption occur.
