Lifestyle modifications for patients with discoid eczema to help manage their condition include:

  • Use emollients regularly and liberally to maintain skin hydration, applying them to the whole affected area even when the eczema appears clear. Emollients should be used more frequently and in larger amounts than other treatments to help manage dry skin and prevent flares.
  • Avoid soaps and detergent-based wash products; instead, use leave-on emollients or emollient soap substitutes for washing to reduce skin irritation.
  • Choose unperfumed emollients and skin care products to minimise irritation and allergic reactions.
  • Apply emollients by smoothing onto the skin rather than rubbing to avoid further skin damage.
  • Start treatment promptly at the first signs of flare (increased dryness, redness, itching, swelling) and continue treatment for about 48 hours after symptoms subside to control flares effectively.
  • Advise patients to recognise signs of secondary infection (weeping, pustules, crusts, rapidly worsening eczema) and seek medical advice promptly if these occur.
  • Provide education on how to manage flares according to a stepped-care plan, including when and how to use topical corticosteroids or other prescribed treatments.
  • Review and adjust emollient and treatment regimens regularly, at least annually, to ensure ongoing suitability and effectiveness.

These lifestyle modifications help reduce skin dryness, prevent flare-ups, and manage symptoms effectively in discoid eczema.
