Assess suitability for peritoneal dialysis by discussing with the patient the risk and benefits of the different types of dialysis access, such as peritoneal dialysis catheter placement, ideally around 2 weeks before dialysis start, and consider the patient's ability to manage the treatment at home, including space and facilities suitability .

Evaluate for haemodialysis suitability by considering the creation of an arteriovenous fistula around 6 months before anticipated start to allow for maturation, and assess vascular access sites using ultrasound scanning .

Consider the patient's overall health, cognitive ability, social support, and capacity for self-care, as well as their preferences, when determining suitability for either modality .
