Follow-up investigations for a child with a urinary tract infection and abnormal renal ultrasound findings include a dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scintigraphy scan 4 to 6 months after the acute infection to detect renal parenchymal defects .

If the ultrasound shows dilatation or other abnormalities, consider a micturating cystourethrogram (MCUG) to assess for vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) .

In cases where upper UTI is suspected or confirmed, power Doppler ultrasound or DMSA scan may be used to confirm or exclude acute upper UTI .
