Follow-up investigations for a child with a urinary tract infection and abnormal renal ultrasound findings include a dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scintigraphy scan 4 to 6 months after the acute infection to detect renal parenchymal defects NICE NG224.
If the ultrasound shows dilatation or other abnormalities, consider a micturating cystourethrogram (MCUG) to assess for vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) NICE NG224.
In cases where upper UTI is suspected or confirmed, power Doppler ultrasound or DMSA scan may be used to confirm or exclude acute upper UTI NICE NG224.
