Screening tools available for identifying postnatal depression in new mothers include:

  • The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), a validated self-report questionnaire commonly used at postnatal contacts to monitor symptoms of depression.
  • The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), another validated self-report tool used for monitoring depressive symptoms in the postnatal period.
  • Two depression identification questions asked as part of a general discussion about mental health and well-being, which can be used at all contacts.

These tools are recommended to be used routinely at postnatal contacts to assess emotional well-being and identify possible depression, with further assessment or referral if indicated.
