Consider referring a patient with a lipoma for surgical evaluation if:

  • There is recurrent infection associated with the lipoma.
  • The diagnosis is uncertain or the lump has concerning features such as rapid growth, pain, or changes in the skin overlying the lump.
  • The lump causes symptoms such as compression or functional impairment.

Otherwise, if a benign lipoma can be confidently diagnosed and is asymptomatic, reassurance and no further action are usually appropriate.
