Effective dietary counselling during recovery from gastroenteritis involves the following key points:
- Encourage patients to continue their usual diet as soon as rehydration is achieved, including full-strength milk and solid foods, to support nutritional recovery.
- Advise patients to avoid fruit juices and carbonated drinks during the diarrhoea phase, as these are hyperosmolar and can worsen diarrhoea symptoms.
- Recommend frequent small amounts of oral rehydration solution (ORS) during rehydration, prepared according to instructions, to manage dehydration effectively.
- For children, continue breastfeeding throughout illness and recovery, as it reduces dehydration risk and supports nutrition.
- Encourage fluid intake with water, soups, and usual fluids (excluding fruit juices and fizzy drinks) after rehydration to maintain hydration.
- Advise patients to seek medical advice if symptoms persist beyond expected durations (diarrhoea usually 5–7 days, vomiting 1–2 days) or if dehydration signs develop.
This approach supports recovery by ensuring adequate hydration and nutrition while avoiding dietary factors that may exacerbate symptoms.
