The recommended first-line treatment for adults diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) in primary care is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Sertraline is suggested as the first choice because it is the most cost-effective drug, but other SSRIs such as paroxetine or escitalopram can be considered if sertraline is ineffective .

If an SSRI is not tolerated or ineffective, an alternative SSRI or a serotonin–noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), such as duloxetine or venlafaxine, may be offered .

It is important to discuss treatment options, potential adverse effects, and the gradual onset of benefits with the patient before starting medication .
