The recommended first-line treatment for adults diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) in primary care is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Sertraline is suggested as the first choice because it is the most cost-effective drug, but other SSRIs such as paroxetine or escitalopram can be considered if sertraline is ineffective NICE CKS.
If an SSRI is not tolerated or ineffective, an alternative SSRI or a serotonin–noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), such as duloxetine or venlafaxine, may be offered NICE CKS.
It is important to discuss treatment options, potential adverse effects, and the gradual onset of benefits with the patient before starting medication NICE CKS.
