Advise patients to manage their symptoms by eating a healthy, balanced diet that includes whole grains, fruits (especially high in sorbitol such as apples, pears, and prunes), and vegetables, with fibre intake gradually increased to about 30 g per day to minimize bloating and flatulence .

Encourage adequate fluid intake, especially if there is a risk of dehydration, to help soften stools .

Advise increasing physical activity and exercise levels if these are below the recommended levels, as this may help improve bowel function .

Recommend establishing a regular, unhurried toilet routine, responding immediately to the sensation of needing to defecate, and ensuring access to appropriate toilet facilities with privacy and support if mobility is limited .
