Recommended assessment tools for evaluating fall risk in older patients in primary care include the Timed Up & Go test and the Turn 180° test as pragmatic, easy-to-use assessments that require no special equipment NICE CKS.
The Timed Up & Go test involves timing the person as they stand up from a chair, walk 3 metres, turn around, walk back, and sit down, with a score of 12–15 seconds indicating high fall risk NICE CKS.
The Turn 180° test assesses the ability to turn around, with taking more than four steps suggesting further assessment is needed NICE CKS.
In addition, a multifactorial fall risk assessment is recommended for those at risk, which includes evaluating gait, balance, mobility, muscle strength, visual and cognitive impairments, medication review, and home hazards NICE CKS.
