Advise patients with atrial flutter on the following lifestyle modifications to help manage their condition:
- Weight loss and regular exercise if they are overweight or obese, as this can improve cardiovascular health and reduce arrhythmia burden.
- Smoking cessation if they currently smoke, to reduce cardiovascular risk.
- Limiting alcohol consumption, especially if alcohol is a known precipitant of arrhythmia episodes.
- Provide information about support networks and educational resources, such as those from the British Heart Foundation and Stroke Association, to empower self-management and stroke prevention awareness.
- Advise on driving safety and the importance of checking with insurers regarding coverage, as arrhythmias may affect fitness to drive.
These lifestyle measures are important adjuncts to medical and specialist treatments and aim to reduce symptoms, prevent complications such as stroke, and improve overall quality of life.
