Refer a patient with suspected borderline personality disorder to community mental health services for assessment if they present with repeatedly self-harmed, persistent risk-taking behaviour, or marked emotional instability .

If the patient is younger than 18 years, refer them to CAMHS for assessment .

Referral should be considered when their levels of distress and/or risk to self or others are increasing, or if these have not subsided despite attempts to reduce anxiety and improve coping skills .

Additionally, if the patient requests further help from specialist services, a referral should be made .
