The first-line topical treatments for managing atopic eczema in children are emollients. Emollients should be used regularly and in large quantities to maintain skin hydration and prevent flare-ups ,.

Emollients can be in the form of creams, ointments, or lotions, and children should be offered a choice of unperfumed emollients for daily use .

It is recommended that emollients be applied in larger amounts and more often than other treatments, covering the whole body even when the skin appears clear ,.

Children and their parents or carers should be shown how to apply emollients properly, including smoothing rather than rubbing them into the skin .
