Recommend patients with IBS to eat regular meals with a healthy, balanced diet, and to adjust their fibre intake according to symptoms .

Advise drinking an adequate amount of fluids, especially water or non-caffeinated drinks, and to limit tea and coffee to 3 cups per day .

Suggest reducing intake of insoluble fibre, such as wholemeal or high-fibre flour and breads, cereals high in bran, and whole grains like brown rice, especially if symptoms of diarrhoea or bloating predominate .

Consider reducing foods that may exacerbate symptoms, such as caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, and gas-producing foods .

If constipation is predominant, advise trying soluble fibre supplements (e.g., ispaghula) or foods high in soluble fibre (e.g., oats and linseed), with gradual increase to minimize bloating .

Encourage regular physical activity, aiming for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise on 5 days per week, as it may reduce stress and improve symptoms .

Advise patients to identify and manage stress, anxiety, and depression, and create opportunities for relaxation .
