The recommended oral iron supplement for adults with iron deficiency anaemia is a once-daily dose of 50-100 mg of elemental iron, such as one ferrous sulfate 200 mg tablet taken in the fasting state .

Preparations not recommended include modified-release iron preparations and those containing iron combined with folic acid, vitamin B12, or other nutrients, except prophylactically in pregnancy .

If gastrointestinal adverse effects occur, taking the supplement with or after food or reducing the dose to alternate days may help, and patients should be advised to continue treatment and return if symptoms persist .
