The first-line management for depression, if the person wishes to start treatment, is to offer a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) NICE CKS.
For people with less severe depression who do not want treatment, active monitoring with the option to consider treatment later is recommended NICE CKS.
Psychological interventions such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), group exercise, group mindfulness and meditation, and counselling are also considered first-line options depending on the person's preferences and clinical needs NICE CKS.
