Early Signs and Symptoms of Dementia

Dementia can manifest with a range of symptoms, often varying in their presentation and severity from person to person . Common early signs can include poor short-term memory, disorientation, and a lack of insight and judgement . Disorders of attention can also lead to impairment .

Prevention of Dementia Development

While there is no guaranteed way to prevent dementia, certain lifestyle modifications and management of risk factors may help delay or reduce its onset . It is recommended to treat identified, modifiable risk factors for cognitive impairment, such as excess alcohol consumption, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular risk factors . Engaging in healthy brain activities, such as regular exercise, word games, and socialization, is also suggested .
