A 38-year-old man presents with a right-sided liver abscess. Ultrasound-guided aspiration yields 'anchovy sauce' pus that is sterile on bacterial culture. Amoebic serology is strongly positive. He is treated with metronidazole with good clinical response. Why must a luminal amoebicide be given after metronidazole?
