A 44-year-old man presents with acute epigastric pain radiating to his back, nausea and vomiting after a heavy meal and alcohol intake. Serum amylase and lipase are markedly elevated and abdominal ultrasound shows gallstones without bile duct dilatation. He is haemodynamically stable. What is the most appropriate initial management?
