UpToDate is powerful but easy to over-consume. This is a system for using it like a tool (fast retrieval + structured extraction), not like a textbook (endless reading).
Timebox by default
Set a two-minute timer. If you can’t answer your question, refine the query or switch sources. Your clinic does not have infinite time.
The 2-minute workflow
1
1) Define the question type
Decide: ‘overview’, ‘approach’, ‘risk/contraindications’, ‘monitoring’, or ‘what changes management’. This prevents vague reading.
2
2) Use a narrow query
Use core term + modifier; avoid full sentences.
3
3) Skim headings before reading paragraphs
Identify where your question is answered (don’t read from the top).
4
4) Extract the decision points
Write down (mentally): thresholds, exceptions, and when to escalate/switch plan.
5
5) Confirm recency
Check last updated/revision cues where relevant.
6
6) Avoid ‘deep dive drift’
If you find yourself reading background physiology, you’ve likely left the purpose of the search.
7
7) Save repeat patterns
Use favourites/bookmarks for topics you open repeatedly.
8
8) Keep outputs verifiable
If you plan to act on something, confirm via cited evidence/guidelines rather than relying on a paraphrase you can’t trace.
