The Bottom Line
- PLAB 2 is held at two GMC assessment centres in Manchester—check your confirmation carefully (addresses are similar).
- You can view and book PLAB 2 dates via GMC Online only after you have your PLAB 1 results.
- Demand is high; it’s normal to experience a wait for a date.
- If you have an NHS job offer requiring registration (or UK refugee status), the GMC advises contacting them to try to secure a place sooner.
PLAB 2 is where timelines often become real. Many candidates are ready academically but get stuck operationally: waiting for a slot, underestimating travel logistics, or misunderstanding what ‘eligible to book’ means. Treat PLAB 2 like a project plan with constraints.
Where you’ll take PLAB 2
PLAB 2 is held at the GMC’s two assessment centre sites in Manchester, UK (Hardman Square and Hardman Street). Your booking confirmation states which site you must attend—double check, because the addresses look very similar.
1
Step 1 — Understand the gating condition
You can only view available PLAB 2 dates in the booking service once you have your PLAB 1 results. If you’re planning flights before that, you’re planning on assumptions.
2
Step 2 — Book as soon as you’re eligible (then optimise)
Once you can see dates, move quickly. You can refine travel and accommodation later; your priority is securing a viable slot that aligns with your registration timeline.
3
Step 3 — Build a realistic Manchester logistics plan
Include buffer time for travel, accommodation, and local transport. The easiest unforced error is arriving flustered or late because you tried to compress the itinerary.
4
Step 4 — If you have an NHS job offer requiring registration
The GMC states that if you have a UK job offer in the NHS requiring GMC registration (or you hold UK refugee status), you can contact them and they will try to offer a test place as soon as possible.
5
Step 5 — Protect your account and future application
Never share account details or attempt to book via unofficial routes. It’s not worth the risk given how much depends on a clean booking and registration pathway.
Account sharing and third-party booking is explicitly flagged as misconduct risk
If someone is asking to ‘secure your PLAB 2 seat’ using your credentials, treat it as a red flag. Even if it feels common in the community, it creates avoidable downstream risk.
